Maria-Luisa Alegre

Marisa Alegre was born in Madrid, Spain and moved to Brussels, Belgium when she was three.  She received an MD degree from the Université Libre de Bruxelles in Belgium in 1985, a PhD degree in Immunology from the University of Chicago in 1993 under the mentorship of Jeffrey Bluestone and a PhD in Medical Sciences (Agrégation) from the Université Libre de Bruxelles in 1994, under the mentorship of Michel Goldman.  She completed her clinical training in Internal Medicine and Intensive Care at the Hôpital Erasme in Brussels, prior to focusing completely on research.  Dr. Alegre was a post-doctoral scholar in the laboratory of Craig Thompson when he directed the Knapp Center for Lupus and Immunology Research. She has been principal investigator of her research laboratory at the University of Chicago, in the Section of Rheumatology since 1999. She is currently an Associate Professor.
